Chihuly Collection presented by the Morean Arts Center to open July 4th Weekend

The Board of Trustees of the Morean Arts Center announced that all arrangements to bring the Chihuly Collection to St. Petersburg have been completed. The Chihuly Collection at 400 Beach Drive will open over the July 4th weekend. This location places the Chihuly Collection in the heart of this dynamic, downtown tourist area in close proximity to the Renaissance Vinoy, the Museum of Fine Arts, the new Dali Museum and the area restaurants and retail. The nearly 10,000 square foot space will house the Chihuly Collection, a retail shop, a theater area and guest services.

“We are very excited and proud to bring the art of Dale Chihuly to the Tampa Bay region”, Katee Tully, Executive Director of the Morean Arts Center, said. Tully noted that “our vision was to bring a permanent collection of Chihuly art here to enrich the arts community, to promote economic development, and to provide the Morean with a sustainable revenue stream. We have to thank all the people who have contributed so mightily to this project for without their support, this announcement would not have been possible. “

In an editorial, the St. Petersburg Times wrote “This unique, new space of the Morean Arts Center is a vibrant addition to St. Petersburg’s fine arts scene, boosting the city’s reputation as a destination for cultural tourists.” Click here to read the editorial

Tully also announced that a Glass Studio & HotShop will be built at the Morean’s main location on Central Avenue in the space formerly occupied by the clay program. It is expected to be home to many area glass artists, will enhance the educational programming and complement the Chihuly Collection. The clay program has moved to the Historic Train Station on 22nd Street South allowing for significant expansion of the program.

The Morean will also be opening the Bank of America Children’s Learning Center at the Central Avenue location, a 1,500 square foot hands-on learning environment with a wide range of programming, much of it relating to both the art and science of glass.
