Glass Studio & Hot Shop
A visit to the Glass Studio & Hot Shop is a can’t-miss opportunity to get behind the scenes and observe working artists creating their magnificent glass pieces. The artists provide running commentary on the steps they are following, the science behind glass, and the artistic vision guiding the process. Seated comfortably, you will watch an artist, working in front of the furnace, the glory hole and the annealing kiln, take molten glass and with techniques dating from thousands of years ago, create the magnificent glass art available today. The pieces created, along with glass art and other items from local and regional artists are available for sale in the retail store located at the Glass Studio & Hot Shop.
You can also experience glass-blowing yourself after observing the artist. The “Hot Shop Experience” was designed with the novice in mind. With several experiences available each day, this unique hands-on opportunity guides one through all of the necessary steps in making your own blown glass ornament or paperweight.
The Glass Studio & Hot Shop is a short drive or walk from the Chihuly Collection. Money-saving combination tickets allow you to experience both the Chihuly Collection and the Hot Shop.
The Morean Art Center also offers a full-range of studio classes in glass, consisting of 3 major areas of activity: glass blowing, lamp working and kiln working. For those who wish to learn about glass in all its forms, classes and workshops will be offered year round. Students will learn how to blow and cast glass in the hot shop. In the lampworking studio, you will learn to use a torch to make everything from beads to figurative sculpture. The kiln working studio will provide people of all ages the opportunity to fuse and slump colorful flat glass into wonderful works of art. The final touches are applied in the cold shop, where work is sanded & polished, an art in itself.
A Metal Studio complements the glass program providing classes and workshops in MIG & TIG welding, design, figurative and abstract sculpture and finishing processes.
Admission to the Glass Studio & Hot Shop also entitles you to tour the Morean Arts Center galleries and the current contemporary art exhibitions.
