"Paint the Town" Plein Air workshop with Gene CostanzaApril 11-13,2010 from 9am-4pmThe purpose of this workshop is to explore and expand your knowledge and execution of the key fundamentals of good painting. The class will begin with a short presentation which introduces and/or reinforces the basics of getting started on a painting, whether in the studio or in the field. Gene follows closely the tenets of John F. Carlson and his insistence that the student (whatever the experience level) adheres to strong fundamental principles. We progress into exercises designed to equip the student with skills that will be useful in continuing their growth toward their individual goals. As much time as possible is spent with individuals at their easels in one-on-one mentoring given the variables of location, weather and class size. Gene will demo and paint alongside, reinforcing the tenets mentioned above. STUDENTS should acquire John F. Carlson’s Guide to Outdoor Painting and read it. It has been reprinted in paperback and is affordable. At the minimum, chapter 3 is required reading prior to the workshop. Students should also be familiar with their equipment and have set up their easels so they are comfortable with the process. Most importantly, be prepared to work hard and have fun! Maximum registration is 15 people. First come, first served. About Gene Costanza
Image:"Another Red and Gold Autumn" recently won the American Art Collector Award of Merit at the AIS National Exhibition in October. Costanza is a contemporary realist painter who focuses his efforts primarily on landscape and man’s interaction with nature. Equally at home painting “en plein air" as well as in the studio, Costanza orchestrates paintings that engage the viewer to enter the subject with him by capturing the light and atmosphere. Spending over twenty-five years in law enforcement provided him with the personal tendencies required to find the discipline to create a good painting. Primarily self taught, Costanza has learned much from a number of his contemporaries including a personal relationship with his good friend Scott Christensen. It is Christensen he credits with the majority of his professional growth. His work is in collections from coast to coast and is included in the permanent collection of the Academy Museum in Easton, Maryland. Artists Statement I just want to paint. I’ve thought about it and really can’t tell you exactly why…ever since I was a kid, picking up a pencil and trying to draw. When I’d go to museums or look at art books and see what old painters did, I was fascinated. I still marvel when I see a Rembrandt self-portrait and I’m actually looking into the eyes of the long dead Painter, or look at a masterful landscape and try to understand what the Painter saw. I just always wanted to paint. “I am always humbled when someone trades the fruits of their hard labor for the outcome of mine.”-Gene Costanza
