Glass: a View Within, curated by Duncan McClellan

The Arts Center hosts an extraordinary exhibition featuring new works from internationally known glass artists from all over the world. Tampa artist Duncan McClellan, as guest curator, has selected works by over 40 artists whose creativity and talent he admires. They include Jonathan Andersson from England, Miroslaw Stankiewicz and Rafal Galazka from Poland, Nick Mount from Australia, Hitoshi Kakisaki from Japan, and Steven Powell, Sam Stang, Mark Sudduth, and Sally Rodgers from the U.S. Daily glass-blowing demonstrations in The Arts Center's on-site Hot Glass! accompanies this exhibition.

Beyond Glass: Paintings by Jack Barrett

an image by jack barrett

In 1989, Jack Barrett retired after 20 years as illustrator for the St. Petersburg Times to take up life as a full-time artist. His style ranges as widely as his subjects, from meticulous representationalism to free expressionism. "What art is about," Barrett said, "is to record a likeness or gesture in a dramatic spontaneous moment." For this exhibition, Barrett incorporates human figures juxtaposed with glass vessels of various shapes and sizes.

Project Creo: Transparency

an image from the exhibition

Project Creo Center for Art and Design will open its quarterly exhibition of installation art on the third floor of the Pier on Jan. 30. Artists will shape, bend, paste, hang, and tweak transparent materials in over 20 installations and exhibitions.

Project Creo is an ongoing program of the Arts Center. It's focus is installation art. "With the physical location of the Pier surrounded by Tampa Bay and the downtown skyline, art made with transparent materials becomes part of the view," said Kenny Jensen, director of Project Creo. "Any where you look is a work of art."

For example, Jensen and architect Jason Jensen, his cousin, are designing and installing cellophane partitions of varying tints and lucidity to guide the viewer on the journey through the space. He said that some artists' work will investigate different forms of transparency, like film and photography. Jensen said the choice for transparent materials sprang from the international glass show curated by Duncan McClellen now at the Arts Center as well as the Dale Chihuly exhibit at the Museum of Fine Art.

Painting in the Realist Tradition: Students of Luis de la Lama

In this Arts Center class, students learn to paint in the realist tradition, creating their own artwork under the Western canon of beauty. During each session, students create one painting from the Flemish method, the Academic method, the Venetian method, and the French Academic method. This exhibition features works completed during this class. Luis, a full-time painter, has taught at The Arts Center for nearly two years.
