Cervenka's Artistic Cycle

Nancy Cervenka's artistic endeavors have recently begun to circle around, much like her acclaimed spiraled film sculptures.

An aspiring filmmaker and director, Cervenka set down upon the usual director's route: MFA in Filmmaking, a portfolio of innovative short films to use as a calling card for a shot at directing a feature, and an impressive pre-digital trove of film strips on the cutting room floor.

Those strips of film led to her first foray into sculpture. Fascinated by the tactile feel of film, Cervenka began spiraling the film into sculptures and vessels, incorporating the tints and textures of the film's images into repeated decorative motifs.

Her new focus won her acclaim and a wide following at various art shows throughout the United States, culminating in two Best of Show awards at Mainsail, a Best of Show 3-D at the Santa Fe Art Festival, and a plethora of First Place, Award of Excellence, and Award of Distinction designations.

Feeling trapped by the rigors of outdoor shows, Cervenka began funneling some of her award money back into filmmaking equipment, purchasing digital cameras, editing software, and other high tech tools of the trade.

The irony of using her winnings from one medium to finance her foray into a medium she once eschewed isn't lost on Cervenka, who recently finished a 35 mm film and video installation, Into My Work, featuring a 3 inch image of the artist projected from the bottom of one her sculpted vessels, asking "Is anyone out there? Hey, can anyone see me?"
