20 Years of Word & Image: Arts in Education Partnership Celebrates Opening at the Morean Arts Center

The Morean Arts Center has partnered with Pinellas County Schools on this program since 1998

St. Petersburg, Fla. — On Friday, October 28, the Morean Arts Center celebrates 20 Years of Word & Image: Arts in Education partnership with Pinellas County schools. The Morean is set to hold four juried exhibits under Word & Image, which includes works from elementary, middle and high school students in Pinellas County. The first installment runs from October 28 – December 4.

Amanda Cooper, Curator of Exhibitions at the Morean Arts Center, said this exhibition is one of the best the Morean offers. “Most of these kids have never seen their art in a professional gallery before, and we give them the opportunity to see their works framed and displayed in a popular exhibit.”

Educating children about the arts, and offering them access to gallery and exhibition space has been a key component of the Morean Arts Center’s mission throughout its nearly 100 years in the St. Petersburg art community.

Each year, students are challenged to create works of art based on a particular theme, and to incorporate a written statement within the piece. Past years’ themes include “Let the Freedom Ring,” “Superheroes,” and “Celebrating Harmony.” This year’s theme, celebrating the 20th year of the exhibit, is titled “On My Block,” inspiring students to create works reminiscent of their neighborhood.

20 Years of Word & Image: Arts in Education partnership is a great way for Pinellas County school children to have the opportunity to be a part of the local arts community and network with fellow classmates with similar interests.

More than 1,200 individuals attend the openings over the course of the four shows, including local artists and educators who participated in the exhibition during its culmination who now include Word & Image in their own curriculum each year to encourage their students to delve into the world of art.

In addition to exhibits featuring works of Pinellas County school students, the Morean Arts Center also offers various educational classes for youth and teens to immerse themselves in the world of art with the direction of a professional teacher.

Kids’ camps are offered throughout the year for Pinellas County no school days, Thanksgiving break, Holiday break and summer break.

20 Years of Word & Image is sponsored by the Hough Family Foundation and the Pinellas Community Foundation.
