Atmospheric Pottery is one of the most alluring surfaces one can achieve in ceramics. These surfaces are achieved via advanced firing techniques. In this class, Katie Fee and Matt Schiemann will lead the students through making, finishing, and surfacing pottery to be fired in two different atmospheric kilns. Students will have the opportunity to participate in loading and firing for both wood and soda kilns. Katie and Matt will be demonstrating and teaching the forms they make for these types of firings, the decisions on what glazes or slips to use as well as strategies for loading kilns.

During the classes leading up to the firings Katie will demonstrate her use of wire faceting and how she uses this approach on her mugs, pitchers, plates and other forms. Matt will also be demonstrating how he uses the wheel to make strong forms as well as approaches to using slips and decorations for specific locations in the kilns.

Wood kiln loading date: November 21st

Soda Kiln loading date: December 14th

An additional $50 will be needed from each student and goes towards a bag of clay, wood for the kiln and all slips and glazes.
