Contemporary Macrame for Creative Expression

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the art of macramé, focusing on its contemporary applications as a tool for creative expression and mindful making. Participants will learn basic knotting techniques like square knots, half hitch knots and ark’s head knots while exploring how to create functional and decorative textile pieces like plant hangers and side bags among others. The focus of this workshop will be on material exploration, individual creativity and building confidence through craft. Open to all skill levels, this course encourages experimentation and self expression.

Teacher Bio

Benedicta Opoku-Mensah is a multidisciplinary artist who narrates her journey of self-discovery through performances, video, sculpture, hybrid objects, poems, and installation. Her art serves as a medium to confront the preconceived notions surrounding the self, identity, and gender stereotypes, aiming to question their prevailing status quo. She is a MFA Sculpture candidate at the University of Florida and 2023-2025 recipient of the University of Florida’s Grinter Fellowship award. In April 2025, Benedicta was recognized as one of the Fresh Squeezed 9: Emerging Artist by the Morean Art Center. Benedicta has shown her work in galleries and museums such as Gainesville Fine Art gallery, Cade Museum, Cotton Club Museum, Wiregrass Museum, Historic Thomas Center and Morean Art Center.
