Katie monoprint chine collet 2

Beginning Monoprinting and Relief Printmaking
with Cat Thompson

Offered for:
Fall Session 2 (Oct 27, Nov 3, 10, 17, 24, and Dec 1)

Tuesdays, 6 classes
6pm – 9pm

For the first three weeks students will learn about Monoprinting. Monoprinting is the most fluid and intuitive form of printmaking, and in some ways is more like painting than traditional printmaking. Monoprint is a cross over discipline that combines skills of drawing and painting with printmaking and in this course a wide variety of contemporary monoprint techniques are introduced. Through lecture, demonstration, studio practices, and critiques, students develop the skills and concepts necessary for building a solid working basis in this exciting area. The class starts with dark field reductive prints, and moves on to color mixing and color field application, followed by graduated color rolls. There are no prerequisites for this class.

The second three weeks of this six week class will focus on Relief Printmaking. This is the oldest form of printmaking with a long and interesting history that impacted how people learned about the world throughout the ages.

Students will be introduced to the concepts and techniques of relief printmaking. They will learn how to design, plan, cut and print multiples from a variety of surfaces and they will use both black and white and multiple-color printing.
