Large Scale Painting with Pastels or Paint with Shawn Dell Joyce

Have you been yearning to paint bigger than 24×36? Now is your chance to learn the process. Start with an idea, and gather reference materials, make preliminary sketches, choose the Best composition with class help, the do the studies. Make a “maquette” then a large scale painting over the course of 6 weeks. Shawn demonstrates and uses pastel, but you are welcome to paint in any medium. Finished projects will be 5 small studies, a maquette and finished large piece.

Materials List:

-Any media, oil, pastel, watercolor, acrylic

-Support (canvas, paper, board) 24×36 or larger Note if you are using pastel, I can get you a 24×36 pastelbord for $45

-Smaller surface in the same aspect ratio as the larger support (9×12 = 24×36 etc)

-Brushes and other equipment you may need

-Pencil and sketchbook

-Idea and reference photos for your large painting

Class 1- Planning stage: Gather reference photos and make Notan sketches (3) to Establish a composition. Group “reads” your Notans and helps decide the best composition. Work that composition up into a value sketch showing 5 values.

Class 2- Preparing Stage; Using your value sketch, make a color study to determine your color palette. Scale up your value sketch for the maquette and do a small version of your large scale idea to see if it will work.

Class 3- Starting the painting: Using an underpainting first, tone the surface and layout The reference photos with scale marks on them. Scale mark the surface and transfer your idea to the surface.

Class 4- Lay in the darks, make sure you have a good, solid foundation of darks in place. Whole class will be on the pattern of darks only. Making sure the darks connect.

Class 5- Lay in the middle values, working up the composition to the mid-values and mid sized shapes. Go over rules of Great Painting keepin balance in light/dark, perspective, positive/negative, lost/found edges, color harmony.

Class 6- Lights and highlights and finishing touches. Final group critique and celebration.

Instructor Bio: Shawn Dell Joyce began her career as an artist’s apprentice in NY’s SoHo area in the 1980’s and worked in the studios of many prestigious artists. Her entrepreneurial spirit called her North to the Hudson Valley, where she began teaching a series of plein air painting classes in 2000. Her classes became so popular that she hired other artists, and founded a plein air school with an Arts and Agricultural mission based on the historic Hudson River School.  Almost twenty years later, her nonprofit has grown to encompass a beautiful historic home with 5 classrooms, three galleries, 25 teaching artists and 40 represented artists. Joyce continues to be executive director of the Wallkill River School of Art, a nonprofit arts organization with a mission of preserving agricultural history while creating economic opportunity for local artists. The Wallkill River School brings cultural tourism to the Hudson Valley region through plein air painting workshops and events on local farms, historic sites and open spaces.

Shawn Dell Joyce has won many prestigious awards for including 1st in the Quick Draw at the 2017 Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival, and People’s Choice in the International Plein Air Paint Out 2005 in Niagara Falls.  She is a signature member of New York Plein Air Painters (NYPAP), and International Plein Air Painters (IPAP), and has been featured in many national newspapers and magazines like the New York Times and Plein Air Magazine. She has participated in many national exhibits and plein air festivals, and is represented by galleries in NY and Florida. She teaches workshops in pastel and plein air techniques across the country. Her work is included in collections in the Georges Pompidou Museum in France and the Museum of Modern Art in NY.
