Born in upstate NY in 1937, Craig’s family relocated to Sarasota where he won his first art contest. At the age of 17, he won a scholastic award to the Ringling School of Art. He was a visiting artist at the Arts Center in 1987 and 1991. In 1987, he won first prize at the Festival of States at the Arts Center. In 1992, the Arts Center hosted a joint show of Craig and his son, Craig Jr., a photographer, called Rubadoux and Rubadoux , which was the first time the two had ever shown their work together. The exhibition included collaborative pieces made by Craig Sr. and Russ Gustafson-Hilton. It also marked the first time the Arts Center had printed a catalog for an exhibition.
