Join us at the Morean Center for Clay as Ethan Fielder exhibits his final solo exhibition as an artist in residence. The work in Putting Out Fire lives at an intersection between surrealism and the sublime through narrative sculpture. In his concentrated studio practice he produces colorful sculptures made from memories collected during time spent in both natural and manufactured landscapes. These objects exist as portals into worlds where familiar objects hold space for dreaming and exploration.

Amy Sanders’ Artist Statement

There is an intimacy in using handmade utilitarian wares that drives my passion to make. When making I intend to push the barriers of the technically driven pot. My forms find a balance between dramatic angles and flowing curvilinear lines all while keeping its intended function. The challenge of forming a visually intriguing pot all while maintaining function is where my fascination with clay lies. The clay is only a catalyst for the infinite possibilities it can become.

Amy Sanders’ Show Statement

chinese coated dutch delights dives into the juxtaposition of being Chinese born but raised in a Pennsylvania-Dutch household. Through this exhibition, I redefine the dichotomy and convergencies of these two cultures. As a maker, I understand the significant weight the Chinese culture holds within ceramic history. Adversely, growing up in the Pennsylvania-Dutch area, my first exposure to the world of ceramics was folk pottery. The intent is to take inspiration of surface decoration, form, text, historical references and iconography from both cultures to depict an intersection of these parallels. Addressing these pieces gives me the opportunity to rationalize the acceptances and alienations felt through my experiences. As a result of this personal reflection, I am able to create tangible artifacts that the viewers can utilize and experience.

uncomfortable as i am: Solo Exhibition by Dakota Parkinson

Opening Reception: July 13, from 5-9pm
July 13-31

“There is a great weight hanging, something like an accusation, like a sword, like God- like an institution built brick-by-brick above, below, and around. Do you not see it? Can you not feel it?”

Through ceramic sculpture, installation and performance, uncomfortable as i am demands empathy from the viewer.

Using her literal body and clay as the allegorical same, Dakota confronts the ideas of discomfort and transness with a challengingly intimate lens. In video performance, she offers vulnerability to the onlooker, inviting them to disarm themselves of preconceived notions and act as witnesses.

Through faceless clay sculpture, Dakota invites the ability to inhabit, if for a moment, another’s body.
