 Amy Sanders’ Bio
Amy Sanders was born in Yueyang, Hunan, China and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She holds a BFA with a concentration in Ceramics from West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. She a second year Artist in Residence at the Morean Center for Clay in St. Petersburg, FL. Amy will continue her exploration of clay as a Masters of Fine Arts candidate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. 

Amy Sanders’ Artist Statement  

There is an intimacy in using handmade utilitarian wares that drives my passion to make. When making I intend to push the barriers of the technically driven pot. My forms find a balance between dramatic angles and flowing curvilinear lines all while keeping its intended function. The challenge of forming a visually intriguing pot all while maintaining function is where my fascination with clay lies. The clay is only a catalyst for the infinite possibilities it can become.

Amy Sanders’ Show Statement  

“chinese coated dutch delights” dives into the juxtaposition of being Chinese born but raised in a Pennsylvania-Dutch household. Through this exhibition, I redefine the dichotomy and convergencies of these two cultures. As a maker, I understand the significant weight the Chinese culture holds within ceramic history. Adversely, growing up in the Pennsylvania-Dutch area, my first exposure to the world of ceramics was folk pottery. The intent is to take inspiration of surface decoration, form, text, historical references and iconography from both cultures to depict an intersection of these parallels. Addressing these pieces gives me the opportunity to rationalize the acceptances and alienations felt through my experiences. As a result of this personal reflection, I am able to create tangible artifacts that the viewers can utilize and experience.
