Introduction to Drypoint Etching with Russell Pachman

Drypoint etching is an intaglio print making technique that requires no toxic or hazardous chemicals. This is a great way for students interested in etching to gain experience in the medium in a way that grants instant gratification, which is why it’s one of my favorite ways to teach this area of printmaking.
Students should bring a 4”x6” printout of a drawing or photo. Image should be flipped on the horizontal axes from the intended product. The Print will end up as the mirror image of the original.
The first part of the class will be spent creating a plate from which to print, after which everyone will get a chance to ink and print their plates, making as many prints as time allows. This is an excellent opportunity to create your Holliday cards!
Russell Pachman received a BFA from CalArts in 1993, after which he lived in San Francisco for 30 years. During his time in California, he developed his art practice in various print media, including silver photography, monoprint, intaglio, and more. He is a member of the California Society of Printmakers, through which his work has been published. His work is held in collections around the world, including the United States Library of Congress Collection of Prints and Photographs. Russell moved to Saint Petersburg in 2023 and cannot overstate how thrilled he is to be with such a vibrant arts community.
