Among the topics we will cover are how best to arrange still life objects, how to light the still life arrangement in the space, and how to manipulate value and color to maximize the composition. Bring 5-7 favorite objects.
Syllabus – Fall Session 1 (Sept 11, 18 & 25 — 3 classes)
This 3-week acrylic still life course will serve as a basic introduction to acrylic painting using a limited palette of three colors plus white. Included will be an opening lecture/demonstration on materials, brush and palette knife handling, value manipulation and color mixing.
Opening remarks will also focus on the still life as a vehicle for studying the behavior of light and shadow on form. Other topics will include different strategies for setting up your objects and the importance of investing time, prior to painting, in this part of the process.
Each student will come away with a solid rationale as to why, where and when to use liquid mediums, solid gels and opaque pastes to achieve transparency, translucency and opacity. In-class assignments will provide students with supervised practice sessions. Between classes, homework will be assigned to give students the opportunity to maximize their new skills.
Each class will end with a group critique of student work, with an emphasis on describing what has been achieved and how to amplify the results. Students should bring 5-7 simple objects of different shapes, sizes and colors for use in their still life arrangements.
