Jan Stenhouse: Orderly, but not Tight

Jan Stenhouse (1951 – 2022) joined the Morean when she moved to St. Petersburg in 1975, where she found an instant art and community connection. A regular in our members shows, she helped build the clay program and served on the Morean’s Board for five years. Well loved and respected as an artist, mentor, and friend, we’re honored to celebrate Jan’s memory through this exhibition and sale of her functional ceramic works. 

The exhibition title comes from a phrase Jan’s mentor Linda Arbuckle used to describe Jan’s color test tiles. Jan’s ceramic work (as well as her photographs, another passion of hers) was formed and embellished with planning and care, yet had the look of being spontaneous and gestural. 

Jan was a featured artist in our 2017 exhibition “100 Years/100 Artists,” and she had this to say about the Morean: “The artists, visiting professionals and volunteers from the community associated with the Arts Center (now the Morean) were an amazing group of committed and talented individuals. My experiences there were challenging, invaluable, inspiring and have provided lifelong relationships. Over the years, I have watched the Arts Center’s contributions to the city and community at large grow and bloom into a vibrant part of an amazing art scene.”

Jan was a huge part of that amazing art scene. Thank you to Jan’s husband, Alex Yewtuck, who generously allowed the Morean to share Jan’s work with our community.
