Basics of Composition and Color

This workshop takes students through the 10 basic rules and secrets of how to create dynamic composition for a two- dimensional work of art. Students will receive a broad spectrum of information and guidelines ranging from “the rule of three” to viewpoint, perspective and how to create depth. This can be realized in any medium, from drawing with pencil or charcoal, to painting with watercolor or acrylics.Â
Students must supply their own materials in the medium of their choice.Â
Suggested Materials:
For Paints: Either oil, acrylic, or watercolor) For oil paints, use cold pressed or refined linseed oil. Do not use solvents such as Turpenoid or Turpentine
Flake white (the non-toxic kind)Â Do not buy/use Titanium or Zinc whiteÂ
Dioxazine Purple
Alizarin CrimsonÂ
Ivory Black
Burnt UmberÂ
Ultramarine Blue
Cerulean Blue or Cobalt Blue
Venetian Red
Cadmium Yellow Dark
Cadmium Yellow Light
Naples Yellow or Naples Yellow Light

Brushes: If possible, brushes should not be bristle. Choose brushes with soft, flexible texture.

Palette:Â Do not use wooden palettes.Â
Paper or plastic palettes are fine
Canvas:
Canvas should be a minimum od 8″ x 10″ or larger

Teacher Bio:
Fran Failla began painting in oils when she was in her early teens and has been painting for over 50 years. Studying for many years at the Art Students League in New York City, she is trained in classical oil painting. She moved to the Tampa Bay area in 2018 and has continued to study, paint, and teach oil painting, receiving the Creative Pinellas Emerging Artist Grant 2024 and the Halo Arts Project Fellowship Award 2025. She also teaches art and oil painting workshops at the Beach Art Center and the Suntan Art Center
