Reduction Cooled Woodfiring

Join Dakota in this fundamentals of woodfiring workshop with a particular focus on cooling the kiln in reduction to build ash while further developing crystal formation and deep iron rich colors. Our discussion will cover basic woodfiring principles such as firing based on audio visual cues, monitoring the coal bed and loading for dynamic flashing. This workshop will revolve around our newly built North Carolina style “groundhog” kiln which will teach the participants to load a kiln to fire evenly without the ability to side stoke and how to feed the fire without removing unburnt coal. This cone 9-12 firing will best suit darker clay bodies and matte or satin surfaces. Both sculptural work and functional work is welcomed for this firing. Specific glazes, slips and washes for reduction cooling will be provided but participants are welcome to test their own cone 10 glazes.

Dakota’s approach to teaching is inherently collaborative and will encourage participants to engage in active problem solving alongside experienced guidance. The intimate size of this workshop will allow plenty of space for hands-on learning, taking your chance at leading shifts and plenty of direct access to the instructor.

Please note:

  • Your work must already be bisque fired.
  • The firing will be running continuously (all hours) from 2/27 – 3/2. You will be expected to sign up for at least 1 firing shift.
  • Please check to make sure your clay body fires between cone 9 and 12.
  • $40 material fee is to be paid directly to your instructor for wood.

Workshop will take place at the Morean Center for Clay located in the historic train station:
