Spring Session (April 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, and 21)

In this six week class, Students will learn every step of making and finishing pots for our gas-soda kiln. This firing method is more advanced than electric kilns, and is ideal for a wide range of high-contrast, ‘atmospheric’ finishes on pots, which vary from one side of a pot to the other.

For the first three weeks, we will work together on throwing and altering pottery forms suitable for the wood kiln. Katie will demonstrate her favorite faceting and building methods on the wheel, as well as trimming and finishing techniques. In the second half of the class, students will learn details on how to glaze and surface their work for the kiln, and will get the chance to participate in loading and firing the soda kiln. This class is ideal for a practiced thrower looking both new throwing methods and an introduction to atmospheric firing.
