Organizing Color with Lori Childers

Saturday, March 21

12:00pm – 3:00pm (Optional hour from 3pm – 4pm for students to continue painting.)

Price:

$80

The workshop will happen in two parts. First, a conversation (in the galleries and a slideshow) followed by a hands-on painting exercise. The discussion will explain organizing color for better results with examples from the current exhibit and curated paintings that illustrate specific aspects of organizing color. We’ll discuss grouping color conversations and emphasizing differences for more dramatic results.

In the hands-on portion, we’ll do a painting exercise that will practice these methods. We’ll use a selection of Van Gogh’s wonderful landscape line drawings by mounting a 10″ x10″ provided drawing onto a cradled board with clear medium. We’ll then paint in the shapes that make up the landscape using the color organizing methods discussed to create a more impactful painting. Van Gogh’s drawings are especially easy to envision as paintings and having them as a base to work from takes the stress out of drawing an image from scratch for this exercise. These are exercises, learning-from-doing, not finished paintings. Participants can also choose to paint from their own imagery inspired by the discussion.
