This intermediate course builds upon foundational silversmithing skills, moving students from flat two-dimensional fabrication into three-dimensional forms. Meeting for one focused four-hour session per week, students will master advanced heat manipulation, multi-component step-soldering, and mechanical efficiency using flex shaft handpiece. The curriculum guides students through complex practice projects, including a dimensional pierced applique (shadow box) dome, and culminates in a fully independent silver design featuring advanced bezel settings and meticulous professional finishing.

Prerequisites:

Completion of Silversmithing Fundamentals: Precision and Sill 101 OR equivalent basic silversmithing experience. Students must be comfortable safely operating a jeweler’s torch and utilizing pickle. While refining techniques is expected, this is strictly not a beginner-level class.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Transition from 2D fabrication to 3D dimensional forming using disc cutters and draping blocks.
  2.  Master advanced heat control and step-soldering techniques for complex, multi-component assembly.
  3. Understand the physics of heat transfer and trapped air when soldering closed or domed forms.
  4. Safely and efficiently utilize a flex shaft handpiece and radial discs to refine and polish hard-to-reach areas.
  5. Independently design, calculate material needs, and source precious metals for custom fabrication.
  6. Execute advanced stone setting and achieve a superior, flawless finish on a self-directed final jewelry piece.

Materials note: There is no upfront materials fee for this course. Students will practice advanced techniques using instructor provided copper during the first half of the session. For the final independent project, students are responsible for sourcing and purchasing their own sterling silver, cabochons, and a starter set on 3M radial polishing discs for the handpiece. Dedicated time and wholesale access guidance will be provided during week 1 to assist students in ordering their custom materials.

Class will be held at The Morean Arts Center – 719 Central Ave. St. Petersburg
