This intensive beginner’s course introduces the essential techniques of
silversmithing, emphasizing precision and fundamental skill development. Meeting for one
focused 4-hour session per week, students will rapidly gain proficiency in sawing, filing,
soldering, and finishing. The curriculum is designed to guide students through key projects,
including a simple sterling silver ring and a bezel-set cabochon pendant, with a strong focus on
core metal manipulation skills.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
● Safely and proficiently use core silversmithing hand tools.
● Execute precise cuts and clean finishes using a jeweler’s saw and files.
● Perform basic soldering to create strong, CLEAN metal joins.
● Fabricate a finished sterling silver band ring.
● Create and set a bezel for a cabochon stone to form a pendant.
● Achieve a professional finish on their completed jewelry pieces.

Artist Bio:

Ashley Wix is a self-taught silversmith from Springfield, Tennessee, now based in Gulfport, Florida. She combines her background as a dental technician – where she honed a passion for precision and metal – with her knowledge of silversmithing, to create intricate, handcrafted jewelry. Specializing in sterling silver, her work often incorporates ethically sourced stones and bones, drawing connection between her art and the natural world. She is also passionate about sharing her foundational skills with aspiring silversmiths.
