3 Day Workshop

April 11 – 13

10am – 3pm

This hands-on workshop will focus on soft slab construction techniques. Utilizing templates and slip transfers, soft slabs will be transformed into decorated, sculptural vessels.

Each day will begin with a morning demonstration followed by afternoon hands-on worktime for the workshop participates. Topics covered will include discussions on surface decoration, template development and a bit of color theory.

What to Bring:

· Clay: any Cone 5-6 red earthenware body. I have used Highwater earthen red, although any smooth clay terra cotta body will be fine.

· Scissors

· Sponge

· Towel

· Fettling Knife

· Wooden knife

· Ribs: scoring and smoothing

· Pin tool

· Rolling pin

· Pony roller

· Canvas, around 18” x 18”

· Assorted brushes: bamboo, soft, flat bushes

· Plastic Palette

· Assorted underglazes: I use Velvets. Black, white, your favorite colors.

Kim Kirchman was a Professor of Fine Arts at St. Petersburg College for over 30 years. She was in charge of ceramics, three dimensional, and two-dimensional design foundations classes.

Her work has been shown at numerous galleries and museums including the Leepa Rattner Museum, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Morean Arts Center, Dunedin Arts Center, and the Florida Craft Art Gallery.

Kim has a studio in Odessa, Florida that she shares with her husband Mark Fehl. Ms. Kirchman is a Florida native and avid gardener, finding inspiration in native flora whose resulting images find themselves on her work.

259 – Buff colored stoneware. Smooth enough to throw on the potter’s wheel, but strong enough to withstand most hand-building techniques. Can be fired from Cone 6 to Cone 10. 

Speckled Brownstone – Made by Highwater Clays. Fires to a light brown in color with small black specs. Great for throwing on the potter’s wheel. Can be fired to Cone 6. 

Brooklyn Red – Rich dark red colored clay. Contains grog that makes it exceptionally strong for sculpting or throwing large vessels. Can be fired to Cone 6. 

240 White – Made by Standard clay. Very smooth, plastic throwing body that fires to Cone 6.
