Morean Center for Clay proudly unveils Simpler Times: Remembering Windy Meadows Pottery, a collection of Jan Richardson’s mini-architectural sculptures from her studio in Maryland. Pieces date back to 1977, featuring historical New England buildings, each constructed individually by hand with whimsical flair. The first pieces were built on her kitchen table and evolved to consume most of the buildings on her farm.
“I was so delighted and influenced by the local architecture in my valley, much of which was post-Civil War. I loved how the buildings aged both physically and environmentally, sagging and changing colors as they weathered. Eventually, I introduced ideas from other architectural eras, delighting in Victorian mansions, lighthouses and places that caught my fancy,” said Richardson.
Over the years, Richardson designed over 700 large-scale and 300 small-scale pieces, all of which were limited and numbered editions. Large, complex pieces with lids held a variety of details (roof type, shutter color, wall texture, trim and extra embellishments) which differed, setting each piece apart.
Richardson employed a group of neighbors in the valley to help construct the pieces, and they supported her with the myriad tasks involved in making Windy Meadows Pottery a success. Richardson traveled to art festivals all over the country and hosted events and workshops at her farm, engaging in a creative adventure for all involved.
Richardson is a well-loved studio artist and teacher at the Morean Center for Clay, known for making contemporary ceramics and intricately patterned forms. This exhibition is a rare opportunity for the local community to see Richardson’s artistic legacy over the last 3 decades.
Thanks to all of my loyal collectors, teachers, dear friends, kiln builders and families who were so much a part of this world.
This exhibition is free and open to the public from Wednesday to Saturday,10am-5pm, and Sunday, 12-4pm. The exhibition will be on display in the gallery and retail space from February 8th to March 1st.
