Johanna Falzone: Read with Me
Join us for a free virtual gallery talk with Johanna on August 18th at 6pm!
In keeping with the literary theme, Florida-based artist Falzone presents her latest drawings.
Johanna Falzone was born in Dunedin, Florida and raised a
few miles north in New Port Richey. She received a BFA in
2013 from Flagler College in St. Augustine, FL.
Growing up in the nineties, the influence of punk rock to pop
stars, feminism, Nickelodeon cartoons, and Barbie took over
Johanna’s world. These forces influenced her attraction to
pop art imagery ranging from the grotesque to the overtly
feminine with whimsical nods to childhood directing her
creation of paintings, illustrations, poetry, films, short stories,
“Read With Me” is a collection of illustrations documenting my
journey of learning, healing, and discovering self-worth. This is an
intimate look at my life through books, emotions, appearance,
surroundings, getting vaccinated for Covid-19, and struggle with
depression/anxiety. In 2019, I was on the high of my life. As the
pandemic took hold in 2020, my personal and professional life fell
apart. The past two years, I’ve been rebuilding with the support of
friends old and new, family, and everyone at Women In Film and
Television Florida. During this time, I immersed myself into books
as a means of comfort, to challenge my perspectives, and as an
expansion of knowledge. In a time when people insist on banning
books, I encourage people to join me in reading books, so come
and read with me.
