The first artist of national repute to live in St. Petersburg, Mark Dixon Dodd had a solo show at the Art Club in 1931. Though he created his own school (the Mark Dixon Dodd School of Art), he was active at the Art Club, even serving as the director for a time during the 1920s. The Art Club and the MDD School of Art were next door to each other on Beach Drive. In 1988, the Arts Center hosted a retrospective of his work. The year was a significant one, being both the year the artist would have turned 100 years old, and also the centennial of the City of St. Petersburg.
